text Have you ever seen hundreds of longan trees that are scattered on slopes of mountains? Have you seen kids playing hide and seek around the longan trees planted nearby the house? Well, this is actually how people in Chungliao Town spent their childhoods. Longan is also called Kui Yuen; it is shaped like a pellet, with fruit resembling the litchi. As the proverb states “Litchi tastes nice but the skin is rough, longan tastes great but the pit is black”. Longan ripens in summer season; its fruit is white, sweet, with great quality while the price remains cheap. The “Longan Forest” in Shuangwen Line, Chungliao Town is famed for its production of longan. The longan production in Nantou County covers an area of 1,500 hectares; in 1997 the annual production totaled 14,566 tons, while the production reduced to 7,636 tons in 1998, ranked 3rd in the country.
